Project update

I started this project with a topic that is far too broad. I spent most of my time yesterday trying to narrow it to something more manageable--which I think that I have now. I have most everything planned out (in my head), but I still need to digitize it.

I have my video and still photos ready to download and edit.

Teacher and Student created artifacts for chemistry class

Teacher-created
1. Create a video about how the electromagnetic spectrum relates to electron energy. I would video flame tests and also use graphics (either mine or from other sources) to help explain this concept.
2. Another podcast that I would like to construct would demonstrate stoichiometry--first using a chemical experiment and then demonstrate the mathematical process step-by-step.

Student-created
1. Students could team to make a video demonstrating examples of a gas law in everyday experiences after learning about gas laws in class and doing experiments that relate to gas laws.
2. Create a video that demonstrates the impact that chemistry has on our lives in specific areas such as consumer products, medicine, industry, environmental issues, etc.

Using Technology in my classroom, especially for content that may be difficult for students

I hope that using MS Movie-Maker to create movies and podcasts will enable me to more effectively teach some difficult concepts to all my students, but especially those that need extra help or instruction to grasp new material. One idea that I would like to explore is having students create tutorial movies or podcasts over specific content that could be used by any student who needs extra help. Of course, I would need to preview them before they could be used.

I plan to research podcasts that have already been created to supplement what I present in the classroom. Also, I require my students to find a science current event weekly--using iTunes podcasts as a source would allow them to use technology that they are familiar with.

Difficulties using Technology in my classroom

I'm currently attending a Technology workshop at TTU with T-Stem. For more information about T-STEM check out their website. http://www.tstem.ttu.edu/
After watching a video, "Shift Happens", I was completely blown away about how fast technology is changing. www.youtube.com/watch?v=pMcfrLYDm2U. This workshop is giving me an overview and hands on experience of available technology that I can use in my classroom.

One thing that prohibits introducing new technology is lack of funds. Another concern that I have is will students actually benefit or will they just be "entertained". I want my students to learn to love learning and I'm willing to try new things to encourage this. I know that it will take time for me to become proficient using some of the technology that is being introduced, but I will try to take the time.
